Ability Awareness Awards Set for Nov. 7

It's not every day that a man with Down syndrome is named New York State's Advocate of the Year, but that's exactly what happened to Michael Ostrye last week.

The Jamestown native, who has Down syndrome and uses a cane, was named the recipient of the award, which recognizes people with disabilities who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities, the Democrat and Chronicle reports.

"It's a huge honor," said Ostrye, who works at Crunch Roll Factory in Jamestown.

"I don't think I could do it without the support of my family, the community, and the staff at the Resource Center."

The center, which provides services for people with disabilities in the Jamestown area, also named Ostrye's employer, the Crunch Roll Factory, the Business/Employer of the Year.
